I love too many of them.
I can look at old animation, vintage comics, stained glass, anime, watercolor, retro-futurism, jazz-age design, Y2K graphics, painterly concept art, clean linework, old film posters, fashion illustration, surrealism, or something completely modern and find something I want to carry with me.
For a long time, I thought I was supposed to pick one. One style. One aesthetic. One recognizable look.
But the more I create, the more I realize that isn’t really how my brain works. Different stories ask for different things.
Sometimes I’m inspired by an era I never even lived through. I’ll watch an older Batman, hear jazz, see an old poster, notice a piece of architecture, or find some visual language from decades ago and immediately start wondering: where could this live in one of my worlds?
I don’t always want to recreate the past exactly. I like taking pieces of it and imagining what they could become somewhere else.
The colors, shapes, textures, fashion, architecture, lighting, and visual language can all tell you something about where you are before a character even says a word.
So no, I don’t really have one favorite art style. I think I’m more interested in asking: what style does this world need? And then following that.
